The production has been spoiled for choice, music director Peter Casey said, and will be “stamped with a little bit of individuality”.
“It’s one of those shows that’s gone so mainstream that a lot of people know the songs,” he said.
“The trick to making it stand out is to remember that someone in the audience has never heard of the songs or seen the show.
“You’ve got to sell it to that person and knock them out of their boots.”
Meredith Adams has been cast as the wicked witch, Elphaba, and is excited to make one of the lead roles her own after the strenuous audition process.
“It was three hours, the call back and there were so many other girls deserving of the role,” she said.
“I feel extremely lucky and privileged to have this opportunity.
”Elphaba is quite misunderstood and quite introverted and I’ll be studying her a lot for the role.”
The showcase brings together a myriad of other performers from local showcases including Legally Blonde and My Fair Lady.
Alexandra Richards sang in Legally Blonde and will embody the role of Nessarose, Elphaba’s younger sister and the wicked witch of the east.
“To have an actual role in Wicked is unreal,” she said.
“I was asked to sing in the pit for Legally Blonde and I had such a good time. I thought, I don’t care what any other show is, I want to be involved.
“The cast has been pulled together from so many other shows. To work with them is going to be so exciting.”
Bill Robertson has been cast as Doctor Dillamond and jumped at the opportunity to perform in the show.
“Wicked is one of the most popular musicals around, so I thought I’d have a crack,” he said.
“I’m pretty stoked to be part of such a great cast. The props will be sensational and the costumes will be sensational.
“I’ve worked with about 90 per cent of the cast before so it will be great to have the family back together again.”
The musical will bring out all the stops with flying ensembles and Wicked’s iconic green smoke over 10 performances, music director Peter Casey said.
“We’re obviously hoping to sell out with it,” he said.
“If you’re in an audience with a room full of people, it’s an entirely different experience. It just lifts the energy even more.”
Tickets can be bought on the Civic Theatre’s website and a full cast breakdown can be found as well. The show will debut on Saturday November 4th and run over three weeks.
