WAGGA City Wanderers were left to rue a few costly calls and missed opportunities as they went down 4-1 to University of NSW (UNSW) at Gissing Oval on Saturday.

The visitors scored two of their goals through controversial penalties, while the Wanderers also had queries about the validity of the circumstances leading to UNSW’s other two goals.
The Wanderers after proving competitive in trying conditions throughout the contest, scored a late consolation goal in the 89th minute through Tyler Allen.
Wanderers coach Ben Schmid was frustrated that things did not go his team’s way.
“For sure...add to that a really good one on one and a penalty we missed,” Schmid said.
“They got a few calls and we didn’t take our opportunities. It didn’t quite work out for us.”
Schmid said the Wanderers were competitive against the second-placed UNSW team.
“It was pretty trying conditions, it was very slippery and from all reports, speaking to the coaches on the sidelines and players, it felt like we were very competitive the whole game,” he said.
“It never felt like we were out of it, or being outplayed.”
To make matters worse, the Wanderers were hit hard by injuries.
Vasilis Spiliotopoulos suffered bruised ribs and kidney in the first half, while Schmid (hip flexor) and Liam Dedini (wrist) also came off injured.
Dedini will miss the rest of the season and Schmid may miss next week.
The Wanderers drew 2-2 in the under 18s, and lost the under 20s 3-0.
