Classrooms at Lutheran Primary School were transformed as Year 1 students headed back to the 1800s on Friday. 

Students dressed up in their finest, created their own butter and tried their hands at basket weaving and sewing. 

Year 1 teacher Cindy English said the activities were part of a history unit to help children discover the past. 

“It gives them a chance to experience what it was like in the past rather than just showing them videos,” Ms English said. 

“In a time that’s so focused on technology it’s nice to give them a hands-on experience about what it was like.” 

Six-year-old Eliza Caton said she couldn’t wait to try out sewing at home but her favourite activity was learning to make butter. 

Fellow student Harry Richards, 7, said it took him about a week to find his outfit and was equally excited to make his own butter for the very first time.
