Traditionally held in the first week of July, festivities mark the history, culture and achievement of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. 

Ashmont Public School principal Jodi Jones said more than 50 per cent of students identified as being Indigenous, so it was vital they learnt about their culture. 

Wiradjuri-themed games, activities, performances and special guests helped students identify with varied experiences and past ways of life. 

A football match against Red Hill Public School kicked off what will now be a NAIDOC Week tradition, according to Ms Jones.  

“We’ll be doing that each year,” Ms Jones said. 

“We try to provide as many experiences as possible so (the children) feel that connection with history.”

She said students were discovering details about where they had come from, where they were now and where they could be in the future as “we continued to close the gap”.
