The driver was travelling north along the Hume Highway, near Tarcutta, when he hit the “rather large cow” after 4.15am.
Rural Fire Service fleet officer Rex Sheather said the car rolled multiple times, coming to rest on the south-bound lane.
Tarcutta RFS crews, paramedics and police responded to the accident after 4.30am, treating the man for minor injuries.
“He was very lucky,” Mr Sheather said. “It was a large cow.”
Mr Sheather said the animal was not so fortunate.
One south-bound lane was closed for a number of hours and re-opened after 8.30am.
