Salmon got the phone call she had been waiting for at school on Wednesday when Athletics Australia rang to tell her she has a place in the team for the IPC Athletics World Championships.
Salmon, 17, will represent Australia in the T35 100 metre and 200 metre sprints.
Salmon was simply over the moon.
“I haven’t really let is sink in yet I think,” Salmon said from Mater Dei Catholic College.
“I’ve been at school so I haven’t really thought about it too much. Once I’m there and standing at the start line it will feel pretty good.”
Salmon’s selection comes after the devastation of missing out on the Rio Paralympics last year. She almost gave athletics away but her decision to persevere has paid off.
Salmon will fly out for Gold Coast on Thursday where she will spend two weeks at a training camp. She will then fly to Germany for training and competition ahead of the main event in London.
After having mixed luck at previous world championships, Salmon is not going to head to London with any huge expectations.
“I think at the moment I’m more just grateful to be on the team to be honest,” she said.
“It’s a tough competition and I don’t know what I’m capable of at the moment. I’m going over there with a clean slate and am grateful to be out on the track.”
Salmon will turn 18 while in London.
Despite London being in the news with the recent terror attacks, Salmon will not let it hold her back from achieving her dreams.
“Lots of people have been asking me that. It’s definitely something in the back of my mind but I’m not too worried,” she said.
