The Merger, coming hot on the heels of Chasing Comets, will see Wagga tighten its grip on the “Hollywood of the bush” title when filming begins in August after the success of other local movies like Stakes.
The Merger is based on a live show from Backyard Ashes star Damian Callinan, where a regional footy club is struggling to field a team. To save the club, the coach tries to recruit players from a nearby asylum seeker centre.
Council has agreed to kick in $20,000 to support the movie, which is expected to return about $1 million to the local economy.
Local actors and technicians are likely to get involved again, alongside 80 professional cast and crew for the eight-week production.
