The country’s fate in the contest depended on audience vote after Firebrace performed Don’t Come Easy during the 62nd annual competition.
The final rankings for the top 10 countries were Portugal (758 points), Bulgaria (615), Moldova (374), Belgium (363), Sweden (344), Italy (334), Romania (282), Hungary (200), Australia (173) and Norway (158).
The jury placed Australia fourth overall but once the audience voting was applied, Firebrace slipped to ninth place.
"I am so happy with it, especially coming fourth in the jury vote, which is incredible," Firebrace said.
"This whole experience and my time in Kiev has just been amazing."
It is the third year Australia has entered a contestant into the competition.
Australia’s score could have also been harmed after a streaker wearing an Australian flag ran on stage during a performance.
