Coach Hope Kennedy played for Leeton in Wagga seven years ago.
“To see the Wagga competition grow to what it is now is phenomenal,” she said.
Kennedy would welcome more teams to the fold.
“It’d be really nice if the Griffith teams were to join the Wagga competition,” she said.
“It was always nice to face the Griffith girls.”
In Griffith and Leeton, as more women than ever have been opting to play rugby union and league tag, interest in women’s soccer has declined according to Kennedy, who has played for 16 years.
The eight-club Leonard Cup competition has been challenging for the Leeton girls, yet to secure a win.
But a 5-4 loss to Young in round two filled them with hope and Kennedy’s certain a winning result isn’t far off.
“Once we find our feet, find our positions, we’ll start winning,” she said.
“We have new, young girls, and older girls, everyone’s coming together and enjoying the game.”
Kennedy and experienced players Jodi McInerney and Melinda Broad are adapting to a new style of play.
“Griffith teams are more technical, Wagga teams are more physical,” she said.
“Both styles are great.”
