Orton unveiled his 43-man representative squad after last weekend’s second round and the experienced Griffith footballer is thrilled with the firepower up his sleeve.
Orton has not only selected on-field experience but has also appointed former Riverina League representative coach Troy Maiden and ex-Griffith coach Damien Scott as his assistants.
He has also secured Collingullie champion Brad Aiken as team runner and Mangoplah-Cookardinia United-Eastlakes coach Travis Cohalan as his ‘board man’.
Collingullie-Glenfield Park and Griffith were the teams most represented in the squad with six players each`
Orton said selecting the squad was a difficult task but he is happy with what he and his selectors have come up with.
“Yeah, it’s definitely been hard to do it in such a short amount of time,” Orton said.
“There’s a lot of blokes that have played rep footy before that didn’t get a mention this year but that’s only because there are so many similar players. It’s not because they weren’t good enough, we just had to narrow it down.”
Orton believes Riverina League’s biggest strength will be through the midfield and up forward.
“If we can get a forward line, where all the forwards are available, our strength will definitely be our midfield and forwards,” Orton said.
The first training session will be held at Narrandera Sportsground on Wednesday night at 6.30pm, ahead of the game against AFL Canberra on May 20 at Robertson Oval.
