Jirra Murphy, 19, was sentenced in Wagga Local Court on Friday after previously being convicted in his absence for assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
He was given a 12-month head sentence, with seven-months’ non-parole.
Murphy was arrested in the Australian Capital Territory last month after Wagga police released his photograph on social media in relation to unrelated matters.
According to police facts tendered to the court, Murphy bashed a man in Glenfield Park on September 4 last year.
The man was standing in Edgehill Place while reporting to police that his car had been damaged by youths throwing stones in Dalman Parkway when Murphy rolled up in a car with two other males.
Without provocation, Murphy punched the 37-year-old victim in the face.
The victim tried to cover up and Murphy continued to punch him in the head.
The man tried to run off, but was chased down by Murph, pushed to the ground and turned onto his back.
According to the facts, Murphy punched the man in the head about 12 more times and then kicked him at least twice to the head and chest.
The attack ended only when police responding to the victim’s telephone call drove into Edgehill Place.
Murphy still faces more than a dozen dishonesty and property charges.
They will be be mentioned in Wagga Local Court on May 24.
