TWO of the biggest names in Australian racing have set their sights on next week’s Wagga Gold Cup carnival.

Australian racing’s first lady Gai Waterhouse and champion trainer Chris Waller both had horses among the nominations for next Friday’s $150,000 Wagga Gold Cup (2000m).
Waterhouse and training partner Adrian Bott have nominated horses across both days of next week’s carnival, while Waller has two nominated for the Gold Cup and one for the supporting races.
Waterhouse and Bott have entered Stampede in the Gold Cup, with Lord Macau, Tough As Teak and Red Zephyr in supporting races.
Waller has Life Less Ordinary and Montauk in the Cup, and also Cocoexcel in the Queen of the South.
Other big name trainers to nominate horses for the carnival include Lee and Anthony Freedman, David Hayes, Ciaron Maher, Gerald Ryan, Robert Smerdon, Kris Lees, Joseph Pride, Gary Portelli, John Thompson, Jason Coyle and Liam Birchley.
MTC chief executive Scott Sanbrook is thrilled with the nominations.
“I thought the noms looked fantastic, plenty of depth and good numbers as well,” Sanbrook said.
“It’s a great sign to have so many powerful stables represented in the nominations.
“It augurs well for a great carnival.”
In total there is 29 nominations for the Gold Cup, 31 for the Town Plate and 395 in total across both days.
The Wagga track was rated a soft seven on Friday and is ‘improving with the nice weather’.
