Gibson has also defended his position, saying he still has faith in his ability to lead NSW but understands he is under pressure following a string of poor results.

The Waratahs lost to the struggling Southern Kings on Friday evening in arguably their worst performance of the year, going down 26-24 in front of frustrated home fans.

In an extensive interview with Fairfax Media, former Wallabies coach Alan Jones said Gibson should be shown the door following six defeats in the Waratahs' past eight outings.

"This man was entitled to have a go given he'd been in the side, but plainly - and I don't mean this personally - he's not up to it ??? he's got to go," Jones said.

The remarks have prompted both the chairman and chief executive to come out in defence of Gibson, saying he is the right man for the job.

"Daryl continues to have the full support of the board," Davis told Fairfax Media on Monday. "Obviously he is as disappointed with the results as we are and he's foot to the pedal in order to correct the mistakes and errors and failings that we've had of late. That's about all I can say."

Fronting a media conference on Monday, Gibson gave his side of the story and said he was confident he had the credentials to try and pull NSW out of a hole.

"I've still got faith in myself," Gibson said. "I one hundred per cent expect to cop criticism right now. I'm responsible for the team performance and I'm acutely aware I can't control what might happen in the future and I'm certainly not going to worry about that outcome. My job is to keep firmly on the present."

Jones also expressed an opinion that putting coaches on multiple-year contracts was the wrong thing to do but Davis defended giving Gibson a job until at least the end of 2018 after coming on full-time at the start of the 2016 season.

"I think coaches should be treated the same way as players, it's a performance-based metric," Davis said. "That's the reason that they're employed; is to perform. Short-term contracts don't help anyone. The uncertainty that it creates [is not good]. Business executives are on long-term contracts ??? the stability that is necessary is embedded in those long-term contracts.

"The three-year contract is what we would seek to gauge. [Wallabies coach] Michael Cheika's on one of those. Most of the senior sport administrators are on contracts of that nature and Daryl is no exception."

Hore, the Waratahs and NSW Rugby Union chief executive, reiterated Davis' assertion that Gibson's position was as safe as houses.

"We are [comfortable with his position]," Hore said. "No doubt that [result] was a difficult outcome for everybody. It was bloody hard and we're not happy with that outcome, I don't think anyone is."

Hore believes the criticism of Gibson is not completely warranted and pointed towards what he feels are "wider issues" within the Waratahs and NSW Rugby that have been around for some time.

"We just can't keep going around trying to shoot one bloke for what is a pretty broad range of issues that need to be dealt with internally and externally ??? we think Daryl has got the right character to address those," Hore said. "These are issues at Waratahs rugby that have been going on for years and years.

"After time, we'll review again and make sure we're on the right track."

Waratahs and Wallabies back Rob Horne said Gibson had the full support of the playing group.

"You're the guys that put [criticism] out there," Horne said. "We fully believe in Daryl and his way forward is the way forward for rugby union in this state.

"It's disappointing because it's on us and we're not performing."
