Rose’s Song ($21.00) caused a major boilover as she dashed away for a three length victory in the $30,000 Murrumbidgee Cup (1800m).

Victorian apprentice Lachlan King managed to get cover from an outside gate and the mare unleashed a blistering turn of foot in the straight to put her rivals away.

O’Brien only has two horses in work but has been able to enjoy a good couple of days with Rose’s Song’s triumph backing up the win of Torhonour at Canberra last Friday.

Rose’s Song had not raced for seven weeks, after her failure in the Canberra Cup, but O’Brien was not concerned.

“She was supposed to run in the Gundagai Cup when it got called off,” O’Brien said.

“The time off was not an issue, it’s just been a matter of finding the right races.”

O’Brien had the Wagga Gold Cup in mind and decided to target the lead up events that offered ballot exemption to the winner.

Rose’s Song is a city winner and has raced in plenty of quality races throughout her career.

O’Brien said she is a top mare when right.

“I suppose she went through a little faze when her mind wasn’t on the job, but when her mind is on the job, she goes pretty well,” he said.

Direct Strategy ($5.00) finished three lengths back in second, just ahead of Betterthanyouthink ($13.00) in third.

O’Brien previously had a runner in the Wagga Gold Cup back in 2008 when Inadesert finished unplaced.
