The Bombers wrested back the trophy with a powerful second half performance, embarrassing the Pies by 57 points, 11.16 (82) to 3.7 (25).
“It was pretty hard, tough footy that first half – lot of pressure and obviously the conditions were pretty greasy,” coach Shane Lenon said.
“I thought after half-time, the further the game went, the better we got with our run and spread and ball movement and I thought the way we moved the ball after half-time was really, really positive.”
The positives were there early. A great Brad Turner mark and goal in just the third minute hinted at the danger to come, and his partner up forward, Jordan Matthews, was also strong.
As the Pies struggled in their own forward 50, coach Tom Yates stepped up to deliver their only goal of the first half and the Magpies the lead for a couple of minutes
But Matthews replied to ensure the Bombers went to the first break in front, up by five points.
In the second term TRYC threatened, streaming down field with numbers on occasions only to be let down by delivery or lack of targets.
At the other end Marrar had Turner and Matthews looking dangerous, even if Jackson Moye kicked the only goal of the quarter.
All the effort for little reward seemed to sap the Magpies as Marrar got right on top after half-time.
Three points in three minutes after the break wasn’t ideal and Turner sent a scare through the camp with a shoulder injury.
But the Bombers capitalised on their possession with classy, crunch goals to Jesse Margosis and Cal Gardner opening up more than a five-goal break.
And Matthews’ second virtually sealed the game before three-quarter-time, even after Derek Murray snagged a goal on the siren for the Pies to keep the margin to 31 points.
Turner’s return for the final quarter was marked by a goal in the opening minute. It was just the start of the good news as the Bombers waltzed home. After kicking 4.12 in the two quarters prior, Marrar piled on 5.3 to 1.1 to romp home.
Captain Jesse Margosis won the medal for best-on-ground in a Bombers side with a host of strong performers all over the ground. Yates and Tim Sullivan did plenty of work in the middle for the Pies while big man Lachie Hunter was a handful although a couple of missed opportunities at goal took the shine off his game.
The Bombers also blew plenty of opportunities. The difference was they could get away with it.
