The most outstanding country player, as judged by coaches, at the under 16 state challenge will be awarded the Warren Smith Medal.
The award has a long history, dating back to 1945 and has been awarded to some of Australia’s finest cricketers.
The award has been reintroduced and renamed in Smith’s honour.
The decision is due to Smith’s services to cricket that includes 50 years of coaching, 35 of which have included involvement with the country under 16 boys teams.
“I’m very, very proud of it,” Smith said.
“To be awarded an OAM was good, but to me, this is just as good.
This year’s Warren Smith Medal went to Newcastle leg spinner Toby Gray.
The NSW under 16 team is selected from the carnival.
