There was no way for Rachel Hindi to predict the outcome of her volunteer head shave.
The 21-year-old Charles Sturt University (CSU) Bachelor of Medical Radiation Science was affected by her time on placement.
Her interaction with cancer patients receiving radiation therapy, her chosen speciality in her studies, prompted her to help.
Miss Hindi set a goal to raise $1000 for the Leukaemia Foundation, a target she reached in 24 hours.
She then raised her goal to $5000.
Social media played a huge role in her fundraising, with ‘Fundraising Fridays’ on Facebook asking for donations.
She passed the bucket around during the event at CSU, which she also livestreamed on numerous Facebook pages, and raised another $1000 on the day.
Her final tally banked was more than $8000.
“We couldn’t believe it,” Miss Hindi said.
“I’d encourage anyone to do it … it’s such an amazing feeling.”
She is adjusting her to new hairstyle and is thankful to the many friends and family who have made or brought her beanies coming into the cooler months.
“I was pretty stoked,” she said.
“I don't look like an alien.”
