The Waller stable has confirmed it will again target the race, with stakes-placed stayer Montauk to spearhead their charge for the $150,000 feature.
High-profile owners Neil Werrett and Max Whitby are among the ownership of Montauk and are keen to come to Wagga for the Cup.
Waller trained the quinella of the Gold Cup in 2014 when Trade Commissioner edged out Beyond Thankful.
Waller’s racing manager, Liam Prior, revealed the stable hopes to bring a strong hand to Wagga.
“We will definitely be down for the Cup this year,” Prior said.
“At this stage we are bringing Montauk for the Cup and we have a few others on the radar at the moment that may also get there.
“We are obviously aware of the appeal of the program so may look at bringing runners in one or two of the support races.”
Waller spent about 12 months training in Wagga when he first moved to Australia and has been a big supporter of the carnival in recent years.
Prior will also have a strong involvement and will be guest speaker at Murrumbidgee Turf Club’s Town Plate day luncheon, where he will provide insight into super mare, Winx.
MTC chief executive Scott Sanbrook is pleased to see the Waller stable involved.
“Chris has been a terrific supporter of the Wagga Gold Cup carnival over the years and I’m sure his Cup runners will again prove the testing material.” Sanbrook said.
Montauk, a four-year-old More Than Ready gelding, is a winner of five races from his 26 starts.
