The Boiled Lollies just fell short in last season’s grand final, but get the chance to extract some grand final revenge in the round one rematch with Waratahs.
With Michael Kanck fresh into the coaching role after a late change in the pre-season, he believes the club is fired up for the clash at Conolly Rugby Complex on Saturday.
“The players have gelled well and we still have a good carry on from last year as far as the hunger the guys have had," Kanck said.
“After narrowly going down in a grand final round one hasn't come soon enough.
“It has definitely kept the boys motivated through the pre-season, knowing what it takes to get to a grand final and knowing how close we came.”
Kanck is looking to use the 28-25 grand final loss as motivation not only to start the season well on Saturday, but throughout the year.
“We are really looking forward to it,” he said.
“It has definitely spurred us on and given us a good motivation.
“Since the final whistle last year we’ve been motivated to go one better.”
There has been a number of changes at the Boiled Lollies with Pat Cantwell, James Curgenven and Eddie Lagaali leaving from the grand final team while Kanck has replaced Nathan Honeyman at the helm.
Lagaali has joined Melbourne Rebels feeder team Harlequins, however his uncle Rambo Lagaali has returned after a short lived retirement.
The Boiled Lollies have also picked up two of the most credential signings of the off-season representative pairing Stu Dyer and Nick Gleeson.
Kanck believes they will add plenty of quality to the team and both are good kicking options after Curgeven moved on to play rugby league with Tumut.
After a stint in Group Nine with Brothers, Monson Yavale has returned to rugby union and is expected to make his presence felt in the back row.
“He’s grown up playing rugby all his life and it great to have him on board and back in rugby,” Kanck said.
Waratahs have also lost a number of their premiership stars, but Kanck isn’t sure it will be too big a factor.
“I really don’t know much about much about Waratahs, we haven’t seen them train or anything, so we are expecting a similiar forward pack to last year,” he said.
“The depth in their club is great so are a expecting a pretty complete team and good opposition to play against.
“Realistically our changes and their changes are pretty similiar.”
