Furious about forced council mergers, groups such as Save Gundagai Shire and Gundagai Council In Exile worked to defeat the government at the Orange by-election last year, which saw Shooters and Fishers candidate Philip Donato win the seat from the National Party.
Now, the groups have another government seat in their sights, with the former Save Our Councils Coalition (SOCC) president running for North Sydney.
Protestor spokesman John Knight told The Gundagai Independent that Orange scared the Nationals and they wanted to do the same to the Liberals.
“SOCC has supported us… and they’re very keen for us to come,” Mr Knight said.
