The girls were given centre stage for the touch tournament decider, with the game a curtain-raiser on Hardy Shield final night.

After a close opening, Kildare stormed away for a comprehensive 5-1 victory over Mater Dei Catholic College.

Chelsea Tout opened the scoring for Kildare before Tilly Vearing quickly hit back.

However late tries to Sophie Quirk and Olivia Frazier gave Kildare a handy 3-1 advantage at the break.

When Sophie Quirk scored her second less than 30 seconds into the half the cup quickly slipped out of Mater Dei’s grasp.

Quirk, the Kildare captain, then put on a nice play to set up Lucy Anderson to seal the win.

While the scoreline blew out in the end, Kildare coach Michael Mack was impressed with the high level both teams played at.

“It never stopped being competitive,” Mack said.

“They (Mater Dei) have some really good players there and are a good, even side right across the paddock.”

Since the competition started in 2005 Wagga High has dominated but missed the grand final for the first time after being knocked out by Kildare in the semi-final.

They had won nine of the last 10 competitions, but had to settle for fourth place after falling to The Riverina Anlgican College.

A drop off was needed to separate the sides after both were locked at 6-all.
