The Warriors will be competing in their fifth grand final since 2010, while Turvey Park has missed only once in that same period.
However, it’s not since that year, 2010, that Turvey Park has won the decider. The Warriors, meantime, have won five.
Turvey Park was first into Saturday’s grand final, after beating the Warriors 4-3 in the major semi-final.
South Wagga earned the right to defend their title by beating the Saints in a tie-breaking eighth innings of last Saturday’s preliminary final.
Neither club is a stranger to grand finals and both know that it’s whichever team performs on the day that will bring home the trophy.
The Warriors will look to ‘twin’ pitchers, Montana Kearnes and mum, Jane, to restrict the scoring of Turvey Park, who have, statistically, been the best batting team in the competition.
Sarah Carter, Belinda Dennis, Amanda Gooden and Jane Wadley led the A grade batting averages this season, with Kate Looney and youngster, Kalee Gibbons, also in the top 10.
In offence for the Warriors, Lake Albert recruit, Jess Swaysland has led the way, with the Kearnes, veteran, Nicole Marlow and another former Lake player, Shae McMahon, also doing well.
Turvey, too, has a double-pronged pitching attack with Kate Looney and Jade Olsen both capable of limiting the run-scoring ability of the powerful Warriors’ batters, provided they have the strong support of their fellow fielders. In that department, Turvey have been almost without fault in their last two matches. Their outfielders, Jamila Piercy, Jane Wadley and Georgina Carter are all expecting to have good ‘workouts’ on Saturday and if they can take the catches on offer, restriction of Warriors’ runs is the prize.
The Warriors have certainly had the wood on Turvey; these past three seasons, especially, and Turvey is constantly reminded of the fact that their major semi-final win was only their second over the Warriors in that period.
They’ll be keen to make it a third win on Saturday and halt the premiership-winning sequence enjoyed by the Warriors.
In the lower grades, Turvey Park will defend its B grade premiership against South Wagga Warriors Gold, and their C Grade title against Saints Knights.
