Mr Stonestreet is reportedly in a stable condition following the incident, with a trauma surgeon on hand at the hospital to treat him when he arrived.
Griffith mayor John Dal Broi said Mr Stonestreet had been fortunate the surgeon was spending a week at St Vincent’s hospital at the time of the attack.
“He and a local surgeon were involved and he is in very good hands,” he said on Thursday.
“He is progressing well and is a bit better today, but there is more surgery to be undertaken tomorrow.”
Councillor Dal Broi said doctors were satisfied with Mr Stonestreet’s progress so far.
News of the attack on the general manager was met with shock in the community, with residents horrified to hear of what had befallen the well-respected man.
“Brett and his family have really endeared themselves to the Griffith community … they have been involved in a lot of community activities from when they first came to Griffith,” Cr Dal Broi said.
“It is certainly a real shock for everyone.”
Mr Stonestreet was hospitalised with multiple stab wounds early on Wednesday morning.
Police have confirmed they attended a home on Hillam Drive at 5.45am after they received a call regarding a concern for welfare.
Upon arriving officers said they spoke with a 55-year-old man, who advised them he was concerned about the actions of another male at the property.
The 55-year-old entered the bedroom of the home where he was attacked by the man who was armed with a knife, suffering multiple stab wounds.
Police intervened and the assailant was arrested without further incident.
The alleged attacker remains at Griffith Police Station and is assisting police with their inquiries into the matter.
