On the mend after off-season surgery, Smart has decided to sit out Gundagai’s trial against Woden Valley in Canberra on Saturday.
“I’ll give it a miss,” Smart said. “(But) I’m definitely locked in for round one.
“I’m confident I’ll be right to go.
“It feels really good.”
Smart will be among several senior players to skip Gundagai’s last hurrah before the premiership opener.
Last year’s Weissel Medal champion Brett Eccleston, powerful Kieran Pearce and star recruit Luke Berkrey will also be missing against Woden Valley.
