Six RFS and two Fire & Rescue tankers are at a property off Mingara Street, North Wagga following an urgent call-out at about 2.20pm.
The fire was quickly brought under control and crews are now separating the burning bales from the other bales.
Inspector Scott Conlan from the RFS said with the prevailing easterly breeze, smoke was expected to linger over North Wagga and Wiradjuri for a number of hours.
He said the stack of about 100 round bales combusted due to the moisture in the hay and the breeze.
“The fire is now under control but we will be out there for a number of hours ensuring it is extinguished,” Inspector Conlan said.
