An urgent warning was issued last week after council testing discovered alarmingly high levels of bacteria in the popular lake.

On Friday, that threat was eased but council says locals should still avoid “primary contact” with the water.

Fishing, skiing and other activities are considered relatively safe but swimming is being discouraged.

The bacteria level currently sits at “medium” and warning signs around the lake have been altered to reflect that.

The bacteria present is called enterococci, which is tolerant to a wide range of environmental conditions and extreme temperatures.

Council staff will continue to regularly monitor the quality of the water and inform the community about any further changes.
