In an evening of clear-cut results, Cobras defeated Katana Security Wizards 10-5, leaping into second, relegating the Wizards into third, and last-placed Casuals upset competition leaders Quolls with a 10-5 win at Jubilee Park.
Cobras’ coach Andrew Baggio praised the teenagers, who hardly put a foot wrong on Tuesday.
Winger Tristan Wheeler, 14, scored the bulk of Cobras’ tries in the first half, bringing the score to 5-1 at the end of the first half.
Lachie Johnson, 15, didn’t look out of place at link surrounded by veterans of the game.
The Cobras outpaced the Wizards; able to drive forward and maximise their time on the try-line.
“On the line they’re (Wizards) a challenge, everyone in the comp can put 10 tries on if they want,” he said.
“Through the middle they lacked a few players so we were able to ruck past that.”
Wizards lost Carter Lovell, who moved away last week.
Rhys Graham and Alex McKenzie were agile and produced impressive plays, but the team lacked consistency.
Cobras' pressure on the try-line meant Wizards, understaffed with one substitute, had no time to rest.
“We’re trying to get to the line and do a few different things where we spread the ball as much as we can to give everyone plenty of width and keep everyone honest,” Baggio said.
At finals in a fortnight, Cobras will welcome Ben Absolum back into the fold.
“If we get him back, we’ll be a big threat,” Baggio said.
“The comp’s pretty open to be honest, I think if we turn up, we’re a chance, so is everyone. It’s really close.”
Best: Baggio (Cobras, 3), Chris Dowell (Cobras, 2), McKenzie (Wizards, 1).
In the women’s premier league, defending premiers Don Tuckwells Audio finally set themselves apart from Young Guns, in outright second after being equal second for several weeks, cementing a top-two spot for finals, as they have the bye next week.
Young Guns lost to Bar Up Bullbars, lagging and understaffed after State Cup on the weekend, and dropped to third on the ladder.
Tuckies defeated KFK 10-4 and Bullbars’ star Rachael Addison worked with fellow mid and links Gemma Walker, Serinah Maddox and Imogen Robertson to set up tries and score them, contributing heavily to an 8-3 win.
Best: Addison (Bar Up Bullbars, 3), Bronte Prestage (Young Guns, 2), Gemma Walker (Bullbars, 1).
