Inspector Andrew Spliet was faced with a split-second decision when an aggravated man armed with a metal tyre lever took a swing for his friend’s head.
The brave officer delivered a last minute non-fatal shot that saved a fellow detective and lead to the arrest of the armed perpetrator in Collarenebri.
He was recognised with a Commissioner’s Commendation for Courage at the 2017 Wagga Local Area Command police medals and awards ceremony.
Inspector Spliet described it as a “huge honour” and a part of the job.
NSW Police Assistant Commissioner Gary Worboys was among those in attendance at the Wagga Art Gallery to pay respects to the officers keeping the Riverina safe.
More than 100 officers attended the ceremony.
