Anniversary of this unit’s formation at Tel-el-Kebir, and we had arranged festivities to commemorate the event at Buire, which, however, was knocked on the head by this move. Menus and programmes had been printed, Guard’s Band engaged to play during the afternoon and a good dinner prepared, all of which had to be given up. Had a fairly busy day with dressing and general work, and getting a requisition prepared. Most cases were trench foot, with a few general sickness and wounded.
Great happenings in the line during the night. It appears that something in the nature of a general withdrawal of Fritz from his first line was made and our chaps have advanced a distance varying from different reports from 600 yds. to 10 miles. All we know for sure is that an advance has been made without opposition. We received a signal message to prepare to move forward at a minute’s notice, but the order was countermanded later, and the 15th Field sent a section forward instead. Naturally everyone is much elated and eagerly awaiting further news.
