Mr Sheather, along with four other deserving Wagga community members, has been nominated for this year’s Australia Day Citizen of the Year award.
A Wagga Uniting Church volunteer, Mr Sheather has been running a number of volunteer programs for the past 20 years.
He runs a school breakfast program, a Christmas luncheon, a food hamper ministry and a fiesta event.
“I love helping people – I think I get more out of it than they do,” Mr Sheather said.
“The rewards are astounding. You meet some wonderful people, from fellow volunteers to clients.”
Mr Sheather said he was humbled to receive the nomination.
“It is pretty humbling when you stop and think of the other 82 volunteers who do as much work as I do,” Mr Sheather said.
“It is rewarding to be recognised for what we do.
“Australia Day is very exciting, it marks another new year to look forward to.”
