A look back at how her ministerial career unravelled:

January 3: It was revealed the Farrer MP had charged taxpayers more than $12,000 to charter a government VIP jet to the Gold Coast for an afternoon meeting in March 2016.

January 6: News Corp newspapers revealed Ms Ley and her husband had bought a $795,000 Gold Coast investment property during a May 2015 trip to Queensland during which she made a $1.3 billion Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme announcement.

The trip was reported as "official business" and Ms Ley received a $370 travel allowance to stay the night. She said the apartment purchase had not been "planned nor anticipated".

Labor called on Ms Ley to front the media to explain her expenses and release her ministerial diary.

January 9: Pressure grew as it was revealed Ms Ley billed taxpayers for airfares and taxis for New Year's Eve celebrations in 2013 and 2014. She attended functions hosted by Queensland businesswoman and political donor Sarina Russo.

Ms Ley stood aside as health minister pending an investigation, acknowledging she'd made "error of judgment" and fallen short of Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull's standards.

January 10: It was revealed Ms Ley had inspected another Gold Coast apartment during a work trip, nine months before she made the May 20015 purchase.

January 11: Fairfax Media revealed Ms Ley charged taxpayers more than $13,000 to fly on charter planes along busy capital city routes. She refused to say why she had not used cheaper commercial options.

January 12: Department of Finance reports showed Ms Ley had made 17 trips to the Gold Coast between 2013 and 2016, costing taxpayers more than $40,000.

January 13: Mr Turnbull announced Ms Ley had resigned over the scandal and a new independent authority to manage MPs expenses would be established.
