And he is not the only one, with up to 15 Murray cod larger than a metre being caught in our region’s waterways just in the past fortnight.
Wagga Marine’s Craig Harris said this cod season was already shaping up as a great one with three months still to go.
He said that more anglers were targeting the big fish and reaping the rewards.
“The flood (in October) would have got a lot of the large cod moving,” Mr Harris said.
“At the river near Berembed Weir (near Galore) you can get a bite every five minutes.”
Mr Higginson said his big catch was made all the more special because he got to share it with his son, Grant.
“It was all over in 45 seconds – it didn’t really fight that much,” he said.
Mr Higginson said the cod was caught downstream of the Jones travelling stock reserve boat ramp, near Currawarna, about 8.30am, and released it after taking pics.
“A beautiful fish deserves to be put back,” he said.
“Anyone dreams of catching a cod over a metre.”
The 61-year-old caught the beast using a surface lure.
Mr Harris said anglers were using locally made lures specially designed for the Murrumbidgee River.
“It’s breeding season for birds (which means surface lures are good at the moment),” he said.
