Police were called to Tobruk Street shortly after 6pm to discover an agitated 48-year-old, a wounded pooch, several injured patrons and a licensee suffering from facial bruising and a split lip.
It is alleged the 48-year-old Ashmont man, who had been acting up throughout the night, was livid when asked to leave the premises by staff.
Detectives claim the accused then grabbed a small dog and used it to bludgeon nearby patrons.
He was arrested and subsequently charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm, animal cruelty and refusing to leave a licensed premises.
Paramedics treated the licensee and another patron for lacerations and minor injuries.
It is unknown what dog breed was used as a melee weapon, but police believe it may have been a puppy.
“It wasn’t a German Shepard, that’s for sure,” Inspector Peter Robertson said.
“Police believe the puppy suffered minor injuries to the leg.”
It comes just several weeks after 34-year-old Ashmont man Terry Wickey was killed outside the venue by an alleged coward punch.
