Despite a quiet pre-Christmas period, the Bushpigs are talking to a handful of experienced players.
“We need some depth – if we’d had a bit of depth last year, I think we would’ve won a couple more,” Athanitis said.
“We’re coming from a fair way back with those sort of things – we probably don’t have the capital the other teams have.”
Athanitis said all but one or two of last year’s squad will be back next year including exciting midfielder Rob Herzfeld and big men Harrison Footte and Dominic Smith.
Given the disruption that uni holidays causes to pre-season, Athanitis said CSU will be suited by a later start to the season.
“I’m confident we’ll go alright, the late start helps – it’s huge for us having the bye first up, and then Easter,” he said.
“That extra two weeks gives us a chance to catch up to where everyone else is.”
CSU’s first game will be at Temora on April 22, a week after the general bye for Easter.
