The talented three-year-old will be put to the test at a Saturday metropolitan meeting when he contests the $60,000 TAB Highway Class Two Handicap (1400m).
Forever Newyork has returned in brilliant order this campaign with dominant victories in maiden and class one company at Wagga in November.
Colvin said Forever Newyork deserves a crack at a Highway.
“It’s a class two, so it’s no good staying and winning a couple more around here and not being able to have a crack at it,” Colvin said.
“The way he’s gone at his last couple, he deserves to have a crack.
“The 1400m is alright but I would have liked it to be 1500 or something a bit further.”
Boosting Colvin’s confidence is how the horse has progressed since his fast-finishing victory at Wagga last start.
“Looking at the form, if he runs up his best I think he will be thereabouts,” he said.
“I think there is still a little bit of improvement in him after his last run. He’s tightened up and looks fit.
“He wouldn’t have to improve much to be right there.”
Canberra-based jockey Brendan Ward will head to Sydney to retain the ride on Forever Newyork. Ward could have gone to Cootamundra for close to a full book of rides but has opted to head to Rosehill for just the one ride.
“I asked if he wanted to ride him and he was pretty keen,” Colvin explained.
“He would have got plenty of rides at Coota but he said nah I’ll come and ride him.”
Forever Newyork, a $32,000 purchase at the Adelaide Magic Million sales, finished worse than midfield at his first two race starts.
He has returned this campaign for two wins and Colvin admits to being slightly surprised in the manner he has come back.
“I knew he had ability but he has come on very quick,” Colvin said.
“I expected him to have a few runs then start to hit his straps.
“His runs as a two-year-old were just for experience. I always knew he wanted a bit of ground so I was a bit surprised he’s gone and won two races straight away.”
Forever Newyork is drawn wide in barrier 10 and is rated a $9.00 chance.
Albury trainer Brett Cavanough will also be represented in the Highway Handicap by $13 chance Al Cubana.
No Southern District-trained horse is yet to win a Highway Handicap.
Meantime, Colvin will also be represented by a big team on Cup day at Cootamundra.
Colvin has eight horses in across the seven-race card at Cootamundra and seven of them are right in the market.
Colvin expects Noble Descent to return to his best in the $25,000 Cootamundra Cup (1600m) after a couple of below par runs.
“Noble Descent, I think he’s back to his best and I’m really interested to see how he goes,” he said.
“He was clustered up last start and he’s a horse that needs some galloping room to work his way into it.”
