AFL’s return to Narrandera Sportsground was confirmed on Wednesday with the announcement that Greater Western Sydney (GWS) will play West Coast Eagles on Saturday, February 18.
It will be the first time an AFL pre-season game has been played in Narrandera since 2010.
Flynn declared he and Williams will be doing everything possible to win a spot in the Giants’ team for the Narrandera clash.
“That’s the goal,” Flynn said.
“I know it’s a pre-season game but you have still got to work really hard to earn a spot. I know Leon (Cameron) won’t be giving games out, that’s for sure.”
While a homecoming for Williams and Flynn, it will be close enough to the same thing for Leeton’s Jacob Hopper, Wagga’s Harry Himmelberg and Collingullie pair Matt Kennedy and Harry Perryman.
Flynn was just a teenager when Narrandera Sportsground last hosted an AFL fixture and he knows how big of a coup it is for the town.
“It’s awesome isn’t it? I remember the Swans playing Richmond and Collingwood and it was just unreal,” Flynn said.
“Now for the Giants to go back there and play a game, it’s pretty cool. I’m really keen to push to play that one, it would be pretty special.”
Flynn expects the entire region to turn out and support the game.
“I know Narrandera will get right behind it, especially with the chance of a couple of local Giants playing,” he said.
“There is growing support for the Giants in the Riverina with so many young players getting picked up so it’s not just Narrandera but the whole Riverina will get behind it.”
The game will start at 2.05pm.
Albury’s Lavington Sportsground will also host a pre-season game with Sydney Swans to play St Kilda under lights on March 12.
