Prime Minister John Key resigned, Black Cap Colin Munro's bat snapped in half, and Australian captain Steve Smith was gifted plenty of chances on his way to a record-breaking ton in the Chappell-Hadlee trophy series opener.

But New Zealand batsman Munro isn't concerned – he just hopes Smith's next innings is "a lot shorter".

Munro says Smith's remarkable form isn't weighing the Black Caps down as they look to rescue the series at Manuka Oval on Tuesday.

New Zealand will just need to take their chances on a deck that has produced a wealth of runs in recent years.

"It was a hell of a knock," Munro said.

"I've seen some good innings before and for him to do that on his home ground was exceptional.

"It's not really a worry, because cricket is one of those games where he could get a jaffer this game and get out first ball.

"Hopefully that happens rather than him facing 120 or 150 balls like whatever he did."

New Zealand dropped a number of chances as Smith recorded the highest individual score in a one day international at the SCG.

But 29-year-old Munro says returning to winning ways is simply a matter of making a few tweaks leading into the Canberra fixture.

"We've just got to keep being positive and taking that aggressive option in the field and hopefully if it sticks then all goes well," Munro said.

"We've got to take every opportunity, especially when you're playing against Australia in Australia. It's a tough opposition so we have to be right on our game.

"Just little things [have to change] in terms of trying to take the innings a little bit deeper.

"With the ball just sticking towards our plans – we went away from them a little bit last night but if we can just stick to our plan and just get around the bowlers I think that goes a long way."

Munro had to call for a new bat during his innings of 49 when a Patrick Cummins delivery snapped the willow on Sunday.

"There was a bit of shock to be honest," Munro said.

"I'd just swapped my No.1 for that one and that was going good for me. Lucky Christmas is around the corner and I can get a few more."
