The two retirees, now celebrating their 51st anniversary together, eventually grew tired of their limitless leisure time and decided to use it to give back to the community.
They signed up to become volunteers with the Ronald McDonald House in Wagga in 2011 – and haven’t looked back ever since.
It comes on National Volunteer Day, which recognises the efforts of selfless individuals across the country who sacrifice their free time to help others.
“When you see the appreciation on people’s faces and you realise how much you’re helping them, that makes it all worthwhile,” Mrs Brill said.
The team at Ronald McDonald House assist sick children and their families by providing accommodation and a source of entertainment while they undergo treatments.
“It’s a service that’s well and truly needed and it hinges on the house being able to rely on volunteers to look after the kids,” Mrs Brill said.
“We’ve met so many new friends and really felt like we’ve used our time for the greater good.”
Helen and Jeff are believed to be one of around 800 volunteers working in various charities and non-for-profits across Wagga.
Volunteer Day is celebrated December 5 every year.
