Detectives allege a duo forcibly broke into a home on Lakeside Drive, Lake Albert around 7pm.
A 23-year-old resident heard the commotion and confronted the two crooks, who then bashed him.
It is believed the man was punched and kicked multiple times to the head before the duo fled.
Paramedics rushed to the scene and took the victim to Wagga Rural Referral Hospital, where he was treated for moderate head injuries.
Police later found one of the suspects, a 22-year-old man from Turvey Park, who they subsequently charged with a number of offences.
He was bail refused to appear before Wagga Local Court on Monday.
Inspector Peter McLay said officers are confident they know the identity of the second attacker, but he has either gone into hiding or is on the run.
Police believe those involved knew each other.
