The veteran cyclist is arguably Wagga’s authoritative source on longevity, thanks to a doctor’s warning more than 50 years ago.
“When I was 38 the doctor said I had to quit smoking and change my diet or I wouldn’t make 40,” he said. “My brothers all died before they were 60, most died of strokes.”
Even though his 75-year racing career is behind him, Mr Travers is now hopeful he’ll see the Wagga Rail Trail built before he’s much older.
“I used to ride to Ladysmith every Friday but traffic is the main reason I don’t get on my bike any more,” he said. “If they open the trail I’ll definitely ride it.”
Until then, Mr Travers will keep promoting the health benefits of cycling.
