Wagga’s two athletics clubs are united in the push to get an all-weather track at the city and want to win the support of council.
“It was a positive meeting – it’s obviously going to be a work in progress but all parties left with things to work on,” Riverina Athletics branch president, Brent Hathaway said.
“(Council) have identified it needs improvement but what sort of money is going to be spent on it is unknown.”
The athletics community presented its ‘wish list’ to council, which includes grandstand seating, lighting and office and storage facilities, as well as an all-weather, synthetic track and better drainage.
That full ‘dream’ upgrade could cost upwards of $3 million.
“We’re aiming high and then we’ll work back from there,” Hathaway said.
“We just want to get the ball rolling so we can apply for grants.”
The group hopes to see the project prioritised on council’s recreation strategy, as well as secure a letter of support so it can seek its own funding.
“It’s about working together, and we need to put together what a new upgrade could bring to the town,” Hathway said.
