Emergency services attended a collision between a large four-wheel-drive and a hatchback at the Dobney Avenue and Pearson Street roundabout – known locally as the Bunnings roundabout – which banked up traffic as far as the eye could see.

The white-knuckle labyrinth was made worse when Bunnings installing a private driveway into its store, which has created a confusing fourth entry and exit.

Wagga driving instructor Glen Gaudron said experienced adult drivers “will drive all over town to avoid” the notorious intersection.

“99 per cent of drivers in Wagga are confused by the intersection and some avoid it altogether because they can’t handle it,” Mr Gaudron said.

“I’ve lost count of how many crashes there have been.

“If I'm driving from the (Pearson Street) overpass, turning right onto Dobney Avenue and hope to end up on Pearson Street, I teach my students to indicate left from the right lane of Dobney Avenue at the Bunnings roundabout.

“Otherwise, if you’re in the left lane and indicate left to turn on to Pearson Street, people exiting Bunnings think you’re turning into Bunnings and they pull out.”

Mobility scooter driver Bron Clarke was forced to wait an hour while Monday night’s crash was cleared, because emergency services and tow trucks blocked her path.

“There’s always accidents at that intersection, it should never have been built like it is,” she said.

“I’ve nearly been cleaned up twice at the Bunnings entrance by people turning in, despite having a bright blue canopy and red safety flag on my scooter.

“When I’m trying to cross the entrance, I have to look four or five different ways.”

Ms Clarke said the perilous Bunnings intersection exacerbated nervousness travelling along Dobney Avenue and Pearson Street without any footpaths.

Wagga council refused an interview, but in a written statement a spokesman said the notorious roundabout was under review.

“The Wagga Wagga Integrated Transport Strategy will contain an evaluation of the functioning of the Glenfield Road corridor, which includes the double roundabouts at Dobney Avenue,” the spokesman said.
