Kooringal-Wagga club started on Friday night, with president Craig Lucas reporting their registrations were up to around 160 this season.
“We’re up on last year, which is good,” Lucas said.
“We don’t want to necessarily get too big. Just everyone get involved and come along and have a bit of fun in a family sport.”
The Wagga Wagga Little Athletics club got underway on Thursday evening with around 180 children.
“We had a fantastic evening, the track was in good condition and the kids all had fun,” WWLA president Hamish Wheatley said.
Both clubs say the focus is on fitness and development.
“It’s all about teaching the kids correct technique and getting them out and enjoying the sport of athletics,” Wheatley said.
As well as the two clubs’ own carnivals in November, Wagga’s Jubilee Park is also set to host the zone (11 December) and regional (11-12 February) representative carnivals, making it a massive year for the sport locally.
Kooringal-Wagga will host its club carnival on November 6 with WWLA following suit a fortnight later, Sunday November 20.
