Basketball and netball were the first trials to take place with Southern Sports Academy chief executive Mark Calverley was pleased with the talent on offer.

“The coaches were really happy with the turnout of all athletes,” Calverley said.

“We had athletes ranging from the 13 to 16 years age groups and we will name our extended squads in coming days.

“We were really happy with the quality that we attracted there and that will allow us to pick a bit more depth, not only to assist us with skill level but also in competition.”

The basketball and netball squads will be announced on the Southern Sports Academy website.

The basketball squad will hold their first camp on Saturday, October 29, while the netball squad’s first camp will be held on November 19-20.

All programs come together on the weekend of December 9-10 for a leadership and induction camp at Borambola.

The next trials on Southern Sports Academy’s list are water polo and softball on Sunday, November 6.

The teams will go away to compete at not only the Academy Games but also the Australian Invitational Youth Games in the Hunter region.
