He’s off to Sunday’s NRL grand final after winning four grand final tickets in the Polimeni family mega raffle.
The ‘diamond’ tickets, worth more than $1500, were donated to the cause by NRL chief executive Todd Greenberg.
The raffle raised more than $20,000 for Gundagai’s Polimeni family who are still coming to terms with the loss of their son Lui during a game earlier this year.
Byers, who has lived in Wagga since he was 14, played junior league with Turvey Park where two of his children play.
He was a handy player himself, representing NSW Country when he was 16 and 18.
Byers will take his two brothers and his cousin to watch the showdown between Cronulla and the Melbourne Storm in style.
Second prize in the raffle – a $500 travel voucher donated by Group Nine juniors – was won by the Wagga Magpies club.
Magpies gifted the award to a family in need within their own club.
Third prize was won by a Gundagai family who have four children playing rugby league and both parents involved with juniors and seniors.
Group Nine junior rugby league thanked Brett Nicholson and Jon Burgun for initiating and supporting the raffle.
The organisation also sent a message of appreciation to the broader rugby league community, thanking parents and clubs who bought tickets to show their support for an important cause.
