Relay for Life, one of the biggest event’s on Wagga’s charity calendar, has been cancelled due to sodden grounds with no alternative venue available.
The two day event had been slated for the weekend of October 8 and 9 but will now be pushed back to next year.
School holiday fun has also been impacted when late on Friday afternoon SES evacuated 16 caravans from Tumut Caravan park.
SES Murrumbidgee incident controller Mark Coulter said they had also issued an evacuation warning for homes nearby on Elm and River Streets.
It comes as the Wagga picnic goes ahead as a phantom meet and the World Archery Championships had two out of its five days washed out.
Wagga Cancer Council community engagement manager Pip Grant said the difficult decision to postpone Relay for Life was made on Wednesday. After consultation with Wagga council, organisers were left with “no choice” but to move it til next year with all other sites also rained out, she said.
A tentative date has now been set to hold the event on April 1 and 2, 2017 to fit around cricket and rugby league use of Parramore Park.
But Ms Grant said team leaders were taking the delay in their stride, labelling it an opportunity to fundraise further for cancer research and treatment.
“They are all planning on continuing to fundraise until April,” she said. “We know a few of them are excited to be having a bit more time.”
Gears and Beers organiser Phillip McIntosh said only changes to Sunday were a minor alteration made on the Dirty One Thirty Ride to divert past Hooligans Creek, and extra matting and carpet ordered on the Memorial Garden’s grounds for the cider and beer festival.
“We are full steam ahead,” Mr McIntosh said. “We are expecting all rides to go ahead on Sunday.”
The Bureau of Meteorology recorded more than 100 millimetres of rainfall in the Wagga area Thursday overnight through to Friday mid-morning.
The bureau is predicting morning showers on Saturday and a chance of evening rain on Sunday night.
