Tournament organisers made the tough call on Thursday afternoon after about an inch of further rain fell on the course on Thursday.
The prestigious event will now be held in January.
Wagga Country Club’s club captain Stephen Childe said it was important to make the decision early enough for those planning to travel to the city for the weekend.
“With the current weather and course conditions the Club has decided to postpone the City of Wagga Opens,” Childe said.
“The decision has not been made lightly. All aspects of running a successful event have been taken into consideration, including advising those travelling as soon as possible.
“We would like to thank our sponsors, Kilbrogan Trading for their unwavering support and look forward to holding the Opens in January 2017.”
The event has been rescheduled for January 26-29.
The revised schedule will see the festivities tee off with the Lakeside 4BBB Medley on Australia Day, Thursday, January 26.
The first day of the men’s City of Wagga Open will be held on Saturday, January 28. The second day of the event, along with the ladies’ City of Wagga Open will be held on Sunday, January 29.
Wagga Country Club will still hold a host of events over the long weekend, subject to the weather and course conditions.
A carvery and $1000 members draw will get the weekend underway on Friday.
A members stableford, for men and women, will be held on Saturday.
There is social golf available on Sunday and Monday. A veterans nine hole competition will also take place on Monday.
Childe explained that it was not an easy decision to make.
“We’ve just had water on top of more water on top of more water,” he said.
“Thank you to all our golfers for your co-operation and understanding in making these changes.”
A month of heavy rain has caused havoc to Wagga sporting events.
Already over the long weekend, the wet weather has claimed the City of Wagga Open and the on-track action at the Wagga Picnic races. Friday week’s Lockhart picnics have also been called off.
