After serving on council for 33 years, including 17 years as mayor, Lola Cummins hung up her hat after this month’s election.
Ms Cummins blazed a trail for aspiring female councillors to follow, being elected as Junee’s second female councillor and first female mayor.
Current mayor Neil Smith said the town had undergone a remarkable transformation under the popular former mayor’s stewardship.
“During the early 1990s, Junee was at an all time low,” Cr Smith said.
“Low in terms of public infrastructure and low in terms of community self-esteem.
“In the 17 years that Lola Cummins has been mayor, we have seen a huge turnaround for the people of Junee.”
Ms Cummins oversaw the construction of facilities which set Junee apart from towns of similar size, he said.
Projects completed under her stewardship included the new $13 million medical centre, a $2.5 million sports and aquatic centre and a $1.5 million public library.
Ms Cummins also oversaw a major upgrade to the town's two main streets, including fully accessible footpaths, street furniture and gardens.
