Fortunately, Cootamundra’s Cup meeting has been saved and postponed to Saturday, December 10.
Cootamundra Turf Club president Brad Shields is relieved they have been able to save their important Cup meeting.
“We’re just happy we get to run the Cup,” Shields said.
“It also gives time for the track to recover.”
Cootamundra, like most tracks across the Southern District, have been inundated with rain over the past couple of months.
Their annual Cup meeting is always a popular one given the timing, on the Sunday of the October long weekend.
Shields is confident the December 10 meeting can be just as big.
“We might get a few Christmas parties and things like that,” he said.
“A Saturday is a good day to have it and we should be able to get a good local crowd.”
Meantime, the race meeting scheduled for Murrumbidgee Turf Club on Saturday is unlikely to go ahead.
The Wagga track received 26 millimetres of rain on Tuesday night and further rainfall continued on Wednesday.
Stand-in Southern District steward Troy Vassallo conceded the meeting was in serious doubt.
“I would say they are doubtful but we’ll conduct final fields (on Thursday) and give it every chance,” Vassallo said.
A track inspection will be conducted on Friday.
The Wagga track has already received a 150 millimetres of rain since September 1.
It will be the sixth consecutive washout in the Southern District.
