CHILDREN’S chalk drawings around Wagga’s Cenotaph during the Spring Street Festival on Saturday have angered members of the RSL sub-branch.

“The surroundings are part of the cenotaph,” said sub-branch treasurer Brian Watts, explaining that cenotaphs are sacred places symbolising an empty tomb because the body is buried elsewhere.
“Even though it is chalk and it washes off, that is not the point,” Mr Watts said.
“The point is, it is part of the cenotaph.”
Festival organiser, Alex Tierney, said the drawings were not one of the event’s planned activities and were not meant to be disrespectful of the cenotaph.
She said steps would be taken to prevent a repeat next year.
